Tillage can be an important practice for specific fields and production types, but if you do choose to till in your farming practice, it’s important to use the right tool. Our team at Central Machinery Sales is here to help you find the right equipment for your operation.

Deep Tillage

When you need to till deeper than 10 inches, there are a few different implements you can use. First is the moldboard plow, which can invert the soil at a depth between 8 to 12 inches. Next is the disk ripper, which doesn’t invert the soil completely, but uses shallow disks to till the soil between 12 and 16 inches.

Deep zone tilling utilizes in-line subsoilers, rippers, or a paraplow. These implements can work with depths of up to 20 inches.

Medium Tillage

If you don’t need that much depth, but still need to make a good impact on your soil, you might want to seek an implement for medium tillage. These implements will work soil 5 to 10 inches deep.

Common options for medium tillage include chisel plows, ridge tills, and disks.

Shallow Tillage

When you only need 1 to 4 inches of tillage, you can turn to implements like the tandem disk or field cultivator. This is considered vertical tillage because the implement is not causing a horizontal plane in the soil.

No-Tillage

Some operations or specific fields may work best without any tillage, but you’ll still need equipment for planting! Most no-till operations will utilize strategic spraying practices and drilling techniques.
